Temple Structures

These are some of the buildings and other structures commonly found in temples.

Every temple is different, but most are comprised of a series of halls in a row, considered the main axis; these are surrounded by a compound containing side halls. There are also other structures, some in the main compound, and others in side yards.

Main Axis

These buildings are usually found on the main axis, from front to rear:

• The Mountain Gate or Three Gate
• The Four Heavenly Kings Hall
• The Buddha Hall ("Precious Hall of the Great Hero")
• The Lecture Hall (also called The Dharma Hall)
• The Sutra Repository

Side Halls

These are usually found in the compound surrounding the main axis, but may also be free-standing buildings:

• Drum Tower
• Bell Tower
• Pagoda
• Arhat Hall
• Sleeping Buddha Hall
• Three Sages Hall
• Halls Dedicated to Other Figures

Utility Areas:

• Visitors' Office
• Other Offices
• Abbot's Room
• Dining Hall
• Dormitory
